As a Martial Artist, I could promise to choke your readers into submission...beat them over the head with features and benefits until they comply. What's the truth? This style of web copy doesn't work. Web visitor's need to feel that you are their friend. You are looking out for their best interests. They are looking to ease their pain or gain pleasure. That is why they turn to someone they trust.
I write copy that builds rapport with your target market. Using real life tidbits and indirect persuasion-customers are lead to the buying decision without twisting arms. They feel good about their purchase-they know a great decision's been made.
Verbal Judo and The Art Of Persuasion
Let's get acquainted. My name is James Brown...the copywriter-not the singer. Yes, I feel good-about my ability to write copy that dramatically increases your sales. I spent twenty years as a security officer and bouncer. In that time-I learned how to motivate people of all walks of life.
You would be surprised to learn that I rarely had to use any force. I have a natural ability to persuade people. Verbal Judo is the art of convincing even a biker into leaving the premises-without laying a hand on them.
Working in luxury hotels, you still run into the same problems. Unlike a small hotel chain...the management frowns on the use of force. I dealt with millionaires, movie stars and the down and out. Treated them all the same. It takes a master of persuasion to get a movie star, rock star or sports figure-to stop having a melt down in the lobby. The stories I could tell...and get sued for.
Let me take you back to 40 years ago.
I grew up on the East Coast of Canada. Beautiful. Not much to keep a young teenager busy though. I ran with a wild crowd. I got beat up a lot. Whenever I was by myself, I was easy prey. I'm sure that's a familiar story to a lot of you. My parents were not the hands on type-so I had to find a way to learn how to defend myself. I had a comic book with an ad for martial arts training. I sent out the money and got a small booklet on karate. I knew nothing about martial arts, let alone karate. There were no schools in my area.
The book taught how to condition your hands for striking... using pails of rice, beans and sand. You drove your hands into each pail until you were able to reach the bottom. There was a poster to show foot positions for setting kicks.
My favorite? The punching bag. I made mine from my Dad's army duffle bag. Wow did it hurt when I missed the bag and hit the buckle on the shoulder strap.
It wasn't till I was in my late twenties that I moved and then joined a karate class. That lasted a month. I learned in a hurry-that I hated patterns. When I joined one of the largest hotel chains in the world-the security director was a black belt. We made friends and he gave me private lessons without the patterns. Since that time, I've gone on to earn a brown belt in an aggressive style of hapkido. My instructor blends eight other martial arts into the hapkido-to make it one of the most deadly arts out there. From stand-up to grappling and pressure points...this art has it all.
I've had a number injuries, two unrelated surgeries and arthritis. So at age 52, I'm taking a break. My son is 14 and a black belt in taekwondo. I would love to train with him. He's a big boy at 180lbs and loves to grapple more than stand up sparring. Still going to be awhile before he can dominate the old man.
I've always been a writer...in one form or another. My love of martial arts started 40 years ago. That is what lead me to write about it.
